Getting fit is one of the most popular resolutions made by vast multitudes of people with the passing of each New Years holiday. While it is a noble and worthwhile goal, it will only be as effective as your ability to stick with it. Developing new habits isn’t an easy task in general, but a new exercise routine is one that can potentially be, well let’s face it, not so fun. That can make it especially difficult to keep going. All those pictures of fit models may be inspiring but if you start your new fitness routine haphazardly then you are setting yourself up for a much more difficult journey. With that said, why not make your new path towards a new you a bit more enjoyable by organizing your exercise space and making it a place you enjoy being?

Good Looks Are Only Skin Deep

Day in and day out you are constantly inundated with images of fit and trim models and actors trying to entice us to watch this show or buy that product. It’s only natural to want to replicate those images so you then deiced to start exercising more and get fit. Good for you! Just remember to take a healthy and realistic approach to it all. While looking good might be a positive motivator, there are a whole host of more important and less superficial reasons why you should initiate a healthy life routine.

  • Your body’s systems work more cohesively: When adhering to a healthy and proper diet and exercise regimen, your body’s systems will come to work more efficiently helping everything from the cardiovascular to pulmonary to digestive.
  • You burn more calories: More physical activity means more calories are burned and, in the process, provides a whole host of benefits from excess weight loss, lower risk of heart disease, lower cholesterol, and lower risk for things such as diabetes.
  • You will feel better for the effort: Exercise causes your brain to be flooded with neurochemicals, including  endorphins (or the feel good chemicals), which can lead to lower stress levels, higher mental alertness, and an overall elevated mood.
  • Your creativity and problem solving will get a boost: As you develop an exercise routine it will become second nature to you which, along with an elevated alertness, helps with overall thinking and problem solving.
  • You will experience better sleep: Your body will need more rest to recover from the excess energy you spend and this will help you maintain a more consistent sleep schedule with more quality sleep than you may have previously been getting.

It’s Exercise Time, Not Happy Hour

You have a new goal in mind and have mapped out a plan. That’s great! Unfortunately you are now finding it hard to reschedule your daily life around the set hours of a gym and, as a result, you’re thinking about setting up the basics at home so exercise can happen on your own terms and in your own time. Maybe you’ve gotten a good base education out of a gym membership and feel you can keep the momentum going without the extra monthly cost. Then there are the people. You may be quite the social butterfly, but I’ve found a crowded gym to be a distraction at times, especially when I have to wait on piece of equipment or try to stay away from a chatty Kathy. Whatever the motivation, using a spare bedroom or carving out some space in the garage for your own home gym can help you keep your new fitness goals on track.

  • Save some cash: Gym memberships can really add up over time, particularly when you add up all the hidden costs like transportation.
  • Save some time: Having the personalized equipment you need in your own personalized gym means that your exercise time can now fit more efficiently around the rest of your life. Exercise on your own terms. No more rushing after work to get a session in before the gym closes!
  • Save your concentration: A commercial gym will have lots of gadgets and gizmos that can distract you from your core routine and there will be fewer people to distract you with unnecessary conversation while you’re trying to keep on track.
  • Save your health: Not everyone follows proper hygiene at the gym. You won’t have to worry about equipment not being wiped down or if someone before you sneezed all over everything.
  • Save your privacy: Don’t worry about nosy people butting in on you while you’re working out and, if you’re so inclined, you can even go clothing optional. Hey, it’s your private space so what you do in it is your business!

A Happy Gym Means A Happy You

Now you’re good to go with your own home gym. You workout on your own time and your own terms. Keeping everything on track by yourself will require that your space be organized. If your home gym is not a space you feel comfortable being in or feels like a discombobulated mess then you will be less likely to get your sessions in and your motivation will take a nose dive. Here are just a couple things to keep in mind when creating your own home gym.

Colorful Gym Weights
  • Install some good floor mats for your exercise space. This will not only help protect the floors but will help your equipment last longer and keep some of the more noisy aspects down to a level any librarian would be proud of.
  • Use colors on the walls and furnishings that appeal to you. You want to make this a space you enjoy being in to make establishing your exercise routine just a bit easier.
  • Keep your equipment organized. You will save both time and frustration if you are not constantly hunting around for a specific weight or running off to another room to grab a towel.
  • Clutter is a distraction in any aspect of your life so keep things neat. Fold the clean towels before you put them in your cabinet. Place small pieces of equipment on a rack to keep them looking tidy. Don’t drape laundry on the treadmill or stationary bike. Clean up anything that will distract you and possibly derail your motivation.

It’s All About You

Achieving your fitness goals doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of money on fancy gyms with impossible hours. Not everyone’s life is cookie cutter and this means not everyone’s fitness needs are met with a one size fits all option. A home gym can be the solution to a lot of common fitness problems people encounter. You will save both time and money not having to drive back and forth to a traditional gym. An exercise routine is far easier to stick with when it is more flexible with your schedule instead of the gym’s hours. The equipment can be personalized to what you need without distracting gizmos and features. The key to it all is keeping it organized and accessible in addition to making it a space you enjoy being in. You can achieve your fitness goals as long as you stick to them and a personalized home gym can go long way towards doing just that.
