It’s been a whirlwind start to 2020 and January is already over. That means Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and, if you’re like me, you have just now realized how quickly it’s coming up. We all should be doing things throughout the year to show our loved ones how much we care, but this is the day we’ve chosen to single out over the others. There are more than likely many of you, like me, who live on a tight enough budget which means going all out with grand gestures is just not an option. If you’re also a procrastinator (cough, cough) then you’ll want to find something you can get quickly without spending an arm and a leg on rapid shipping. This doesn’t mean you can’t put together something sweet and meaningful to make your significant other’s Valentine’s Day a special one.

A Brief Rundown Of The Day Of Love

Every February 14th, people around the world celebrate their love for one another. Common practices for Valentine’s Day include exchanging cards, flowers, candies, and gifts but it wasn’t always so tame. There are a few different origin stories for our modern Valentine’s Day which, as with quite a few of our modern traditions, have roots in the Roman Empire.

From February 13th through the 15th, the Romans celebrated the festival of Lupercalia. The festival would start out with the ritual sacrifice of a goat and then a dog by the male participants. The female participants, to enhance their fertility, would then line up to be whipped by the men with the pelts of the freshly sacrificed animals. During the drunken festivities a lottery would  be held that would match the men and women together as couples until the end of the festival.

Another origin involves the Roman Emperor Claudius II who, in the 3rd century,  played a role in the history of the day by martyring two men named Valentine on February the 14th, though in different years. The first, Valentine of Rome, was a priest who refused to obey Claudius’ edict that young men, in order to make them better soldiers, could not be married. There was also Valentine of Terni who was killed under similar circumstances, though there has been reason to suggest that these may both have, in reality, been the same man. Despite this, the Catholic Church still lists these two Saints separately.

There are many modern holidays that have their roots in ancient festivals and Valentine’s Day is no different. It was in the 5th century when the festival of Lupercalia was toned down and wrapped into the fold of the Catholic Church by Pope Gelasius I as Saint Valentine’s Day. This was part of an centuries long effort to transform the old festivals into Christian celebrations by the Church. There are still some small aspects of the old that carry through to modern times, though in much more socially acceptable ways.

Another modern concept of Valentine’s Day still has a root in the legend of Valentine of Rome. It is said that, while imprisoned by Claudius, he had fallen in love with the daughter of his jailer and, on the day of his execution, wrote her a love letter. This serves as the basis from where we now exchange Valentines with one other as part of the day’s celebrations. Through the ages the holiday has been romanticized by the likes of Shakespeare and Chaucer until we eventually arrived at the tradition we celebrate today.
