The History Of Thanksgiving? Well, It’s Complicated. Sort Of…
Like most major holidays, Thanksgiving has a complicated past. The holiday we currently know in North America started to take shape in 16th century England after the Protestant Reformation. The Reformation was when what would become the Protestant denomination of Christianity split from the Roman Catholic Church. Before this, there were as much as ninety-five different Thanksgiving style holidays spread across fifty-two different Sundays. For most, church attendance was mandatory along with paying for the communal celebrations. After the reforms there were still roughly twenty-seven separate holidays.
The holiday we now know continued to come into focus throughout the next few centuries. The Puritan and Pilgrim immigrants to the North American continent brought with them the seeds of the version we now celebrate. The earliest references date to the year 1619 with the arrival of English settlers in Charles City County, Virginia. There is also the more widely known, but less documented, 1621 celebration in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Throughout the years, Thanksgiving has grown and coalesced into the holiday we now celebrate. Its celebration continued to be at varying times of the year until President Abraham Lincoln, in 1863, set a specific date for the United States. In 1872, Canada followed suit. After minor tweaks through the ensuing years, we now have our fall celebration of thanks thankfully set on our calendars.
