Cottage Style Wardrobe Armoire And Storage Cabinet Furniture

Your home may be your castle, but your bedroom is your sanctuary. This is where you come to escape life’s comings and goings. It is where you rest and recharge. While any décor style should always be pleasing to you, main living areas always have potential guests in mind. The bedroom is one of the few places where you can say, “Guests be darned, this is MY space!” A stress-free bedroom needs adequate storage to keep the room clear of clutter. It must also still have all the trappings of a comfortable bedroom at the ready. Unless you built your home from scratch, chances are you had little input into your bedroom storage. This is where cottage style wardrobe armoire and storage cabinet furniture can become a saving grace.

The Bedroom Is All About You

The importance of bed frames in bedroom design was touched on before. For a more relaxing bedroom the other furnishings should follow suit. This is your room for recovery after the onslaught of the day. It needs to be as relaxing and restful as it can. A good bed is an absolute must for getting most out of your rest. The remainder of the room needs to enhance this.

  • Simplicity Is Key: Avoid distractions. Only including what you need to make a relaxing space. Keep big furniture pieces functional and to a minimum for a layout that flows better.
  • Color Matters: Choose colors that are pleasing for you. Night owl? Consider darker colors. Early riser? Brighter colors could be for you. Keep it uncomplicated.
  • Use Accent Colors: Simple colors are key, but this does not mean shunning bold colors. Use easily changeable pillows, duvets, side chairs, etc. to bring in hints of energetic color.
  • Lighting Is Essential: Accent lighting can soften things, enhance focal points, and allow variation throughout the day. Use accent lights on walls, side tables, or even mounted behind the headboard.
  • Consider The Expense: Do not drop a fortune on everything. Do not skimp on vital aspects, though. It is OK to go budget on a side piece, but you will thank yourself later by spending more for the right structural pieces.
  • Take Your Time: Do not rush bedroom design! Remember, this room is for you. With thorough planning you will quickly come to love bedtime.

Not Too Hard, Not Too Soft, Just Right…

What is cottage design style? Imagine you are in the countryside moving down an old county lane. You come upon a lovely little garden house. It is light, airy, comfortable, and appears well loved and lived in. This is quintessential cottage style. It is more of a feeling guided by some basic design suggestions. Cottage style borrows elements from a range of others, especially shabby chic. These include country, rustic, eclectic, farmhouse, shabby chic, etc. Any style that places importance on comfort and functionality. Think of it as comfort food for your senses.

  • Color It Natural: Whites, beiges, and light greys form the base while accents reflect the hues of natural surroundings. Greens, pinks, blues, yellows, mauves, etc. are typical accents.
  • Natural, Generous, Distressed: Use natural finishes for furnishings. Wood, iron, and wicker are typical. Go for overstuffed and comfortable upholstered pieces. Painted, distressed, and aged finishes help to make this style shine.
  • Soft To The Touch: Neutral fabrics and textiles with nature and floral patterns are common. Comfortable and easy to maintain linen and cotton are prefect for accent pieces.
  • Not Too Much, Not Too Little: Accessories make any space sincerely yours. Cottage style is eclectic Work in those vintage, shabby flea market finds until it makes you happy.
  • Simple, Light, Airy: Cottage style is an assemblage of what makes you comfortable. Keep it simple and the process slow. Add items you love as you find them but do not weigh things down with an overabundance of stuff.

Armoire vs. Wardrobe vs. Cabinet

Lack of storage is usually a chief complaint, nowhere more so than in the bedroom. We like to have our favorite things within easy reach. But if there is not enough space to stow it then you end up with a lot of clutter. No one likes seeing everything lying around. When there is excess mess, stress levels tend to go up. In the bedroom this is not a good thing. Luckily, there are some options to help add desperately needed storage without the need to redesign the entire room. Cabinets, armoires, and wardrobes are some basic furniture pieces to expand your bedroom storage. While their names are somewhat interchangeable, there are basic differences between them that make them distinct from one another. Below is a bit more on the basics and some great examples for adding storage to any country style bedroom.

Cottage Style Bedroom Storage Cabinets

Storage cabinets are exactly what the names implies They come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Good storage cabinets have a combination of drawers, shelves, and cupboard space for storing extra blankets, pillows, and seasonal items. If you are short on space, consider using a small storage cabinet in place of a nightstand or table. Finding dual purposes for furniture pieces will help de-clutter and simplify your room.

Cottage Style Bedroom Wardrobes

Wardrobes are a specific type of cabinet and are great way to expand clothing storage. A basic wardrobe includes cupboard space for hanging items and possibly a couple small drawers or shelves. These pieces were common throughout the centuries before built in closets became everyday features in homes. I use one currently for coat and shoe storage as my current space only has one small closet.
