I Know It’s Here Somewhere…

Bringing organization to your life may seem like a task that requires a Herculean effort which is why most tend to put it off. It really isn’t all that hard, however, and the most difficult part is initially developing the habits you need to stay organized. In fact, if anything puts one off from starting he process, it’s sorting through all that mess that has built up over time. By getting organized you will encounter a whole array of benefits. Keeping your personal life in order will help you do more with far less stress and without adding hours to your day. Your health can benefit when you plan your meals and exercise ahead of time. When you keep your home storage organized you won’t have to waste time looking for that special blanket or that travel bag you know has to be around somewhere. Life will get a whole lot easer once you get it sorted and keep it that way.

- More Time: When your stuff is properly organized you will spend far less time trying to find it when you need it.
- More Relaxation: Clutter is a source of stress, even when it’s hidden behind a closet door. Keeping your stored items organized will help create peace of mind and reduce stress.
- More Confidence and Energy: Along with peace of mind comes a greater confidence in your home and more energy now that you don’t have to spend it worrying about when you need to find something you know you have.
- More Money: Save some money by not repurchasing items you know you’ve picked up before but now can no longer find.
The Best Laid Plans…
Throughout our busy lives certain spots in our homes become a dumping ground for whatever needs to be stored. One of the biggest problems spots for this, by far, is the garage. Originally intended as a sheltered place to park your vehicle, some residential garages have become so overrun with storage that there’s no longer enough room for the car! Let’s face it, we have a lot of stuff that isn’t fit to store inside our main living space and, in most modern homes, the most suitable space for those items is the garage. From auto care products, lawn care equipment, and outdoor and sporting gear, a large amount of stuff can accumulate quite quickly. If you don’t have it organized properly then it will not be easy to locate when the time comes to use any of it. Luckily, with a bit of planning and the adoption of good organizational habits your garage doesn’t have to become a storage black hole.
- Make A Plan: All organization must start with a plan. Sit down and think about what you want to store in your garage and how you want to store it. Having a plan in place will go a long way in both motivating you to do it and speed up the process.
- Take Your Time: If you try to go at this in a couple of hours you will quickly overwhelm yourself. Space out the work over a weekend, or even a couple weekends.
- Go Through It All: Take everything in the garage out and sort through it. If you don’t need it, get rid of it. If you need it determine if the garage is the right place to store it.
- Make A List: Once you’ve figured out what to keep, inventory it. Keeping a list of what you have stored will help you figure out where to store it, what to store it with, and help you find it later on.
- Divide Your Space: Make a designated space for each type of stuff you want to keep stored. Having all your items for a specific purpose stored together will help you find what you need for a task later on.
- Keep Like Things Together: A big part of organization is keeping like items together. Keep your auto care supplies together in it’s designated area. Keep your bike and sporting equipment near each other. Keep your camping gear all in one spot.
- Use Wasted Space: The walls and ceiling of your garage can be wasted space if you leave them be. Use the walls for storage shelves and cabinets. Install bike mounts of the walls or ceilings. Hang storage for seldom used items from the ceiling. You have more space in your garage than you think you do.
- Make It A Social Affair: You don’t have to tackle it alone. Involve your family or recruit some friends to help you out. Not only will the extra hands speed up the process, the social aspect will make the time invested far more enjoyable.
